Due in part to the development of informal neighborhoods and slums, Tanzanians do not use addresses in the usual sense. As a result, properties are sometimes identified by plot numbers used by the municipality for zoning and division purposes. More commonly, finding a particular residence or business involves following directions that work back from the nearest major landmark. This makes postal delivery impossible, so those who receive mail must pay for a PO box at the local post office.

By virtue of economic circumstance, urban and rural architecture is often no-frills. To keep homes cool, floors are often bare concrete or tile, likewise the walls. Corrugated roofs reflect the sun’s heat, while overhangs and landscaping provide shade.

In the bush, rural Tanzanians typically build simple homes of sticks and brush—often circular—and cover them with thatch roofs. Most of these homes have fenced-in areas secured by thorny branches to protect the livestock from predators at night. There is no plumbing or electricity: toilets are placed outside and are little more than a deep hole in the ground, with a small barrier for privacy. Despite their simplicity, these homes are the pride and joy of their owners. Every day the women sweep the mud floors with brooms of twigs and twine. Kitchen fires burn at all hours; children play outside; chickens scratch the dirt; and a dog or two lies in the shade.
